Graphics

Champions of Valhalla far outshines the graphics on Thunderstruck II, and it gives Odin a piece of the action. He’s one of the main characters of the game and looks more like the one-eyed Thor from the Avengers film.

Alongside him is Freydis and the oddly named Berserker, but again the latter looks like Skurge from Thor Ragnarok. Perhaps EyeCon got its inspiration from Marvel. We’re not complaining though, as we enjoy beautiful visuals all round on this slot which is perhaps EyeCon’s most eye-catching slot yet. The lower paying symbols are made up of Battleaxe, Helmet, Longboat and Viking regalia, while Odin, Freydis and Berserker take shape as our high payers.

High octane animations accompany the game’s Block of Wilds feature, with our Viking “heroes” smashing enemies left, right and centre with their axes, swords and fists. The Golden Shield is the slot’s Scatter, whose rewards are as majestic as its design.

Gameplay

The graphics and exciting characters really add to the slots playing experience on Champions of Valhalla. As we play we have an intense soundtrack in the background, reminding us that we’re dealing with Gods here, worthy of the capitals.

When we form winning combinations, the prizes highlight on screen, rewarding us for our endeavours. Even better, when the characters are used as part of a bonus round, we get some nifty animation. When the Scatter symbol appears three times across the second, third and fourth reels, we get an extra nine Free Spins.

If any more Scatters appear during our Free Spins, we get extra spins with three Scatters giving us another nine Free spins! The blockbuster feature of the slot has to be the Block of Wilds. This is triggered when the Rune symbol lands on the third reel. A giant flash of lightning strikes the symbol and it shoots off into a pattern, either a 1x3, 2x3 or 3x3 pattern. All symbols in the path turn into ice blocks. The ice blocks then explode as one of our heroes smashes their way through it, changing the ice blocks into Wilds and helping us form massive winning combinations. The Gods are truly on our side!

Verdict

There’s a lot of potential for Champions of Valhalla to be the best Viking inspired slot out there, but you’ll have to decide if it makes the grade or just falls short. We reckon Asgardian Stones has that title. More bonus games would be a blast, with each character having its own bonus feature.

Saying that, though, this slot is still a riot to play and makes a change from the other slots out there, so it’s definitely worth taking it for a spin. Even if it’s just to see how hench Odin is.
