Set against a sea of purple, we wonder if McDonald’s Grimace is missing some of his forearm as this is a very particular hue of violet. But despite all the purple in the background, the many coloured slots symbols sparkle in amongst it.

When we score a winning combination, the symbols pop up out of the screen, emphasising to us that we’ve just won, which is always nice to know. The main action of the slot takes place inside a transparent case, almost like a see-through mobile phone cover. It’s odd as it takes up a fair amount of the screen, but the transparent nature of it helps to detract from the massive lick of purple paint NextGen has slapped on.

Gameplay

To the right of the reels we see the Double Play and Super Bet options. These are brought to our attention when we first load up the slot, with the game informing us how Double Play gives us bigger Wild Multipliers and Super Bet more enhanced reels.

By selecting one - or both - of these buttons on the side, we can add some oomph to our slots experience. On the Double Play option, we can increase our Multiplier from 3x to 6x then 9x. The Super Bet gives us more Enhanced Wilds the more we select, which in turn will increase our payouts. We can see when these features are active, with the relevant buttons highlighted neatly and the game’s general atmosphere sprinkled with pizzazz.

The Scatter symbol can be used to trigger Free Spins when it appears three times or more, paying out even bigger sums when we use the Double Play or Super Bet options.

Verdict

There are hordes of retro slots to choose from when we fancy a pick of Bars and Bells, but DoublePlay Superbet delivers that je ne sais quoi element. Despite its vivid purple colour, all the other elements such as the bright symbols, animations and extra betting options make this one of the better retro slots around.
