The loading screen introduces us to the main four zombie characters, who appear as the high paying symbols. The Nurse, Policeman, Chef and Maid are the undead foursome with bulging eyes, massive teeth and…interesting uniforms.

This is definitely no Rick Grimes affair. Which makes it all the more enjoyable. These zombies appear grotesque yet more zany in their nature, so there’s no worry about being scared when playing this slot in the dark. Creaky, creepy, cartoonish zombie arms stretch and wobble from behind the reel case. As well as the four zombie symbols we have the Brain Scatter and card values from 10 to Ace. Like another epic slot in the Microgaming/Slingshot Studios partnership, Cash of Kingdoms, the game logo is our Wild here, appearing Super Stacked on reels 3 and 4.

The combination of green and pink graphics on the logo and background conjure up images of brains and general rotting flesh. However, Slingshot Studios make this feel a lot more tongue-in-cheek. Which is probably something these zombies actually suffer from too.

Gameplay

Zombie Hoard is an enjoyable, simple slot to play. This is reflected in the design of the game and the easy-to-use navigation bar and buttons, all tidied up and put on the right of the reel case.

We’d like to say one of the zombie arms that extends out from the reels to the side is pointing to the button deliberately, but we reckon that’s just coincidence. However, clicking on it will open up all the paytable information. It plays like classic Microgaming slots - simple, smooth spins and familiarity with things like the logo being the Wild. But with a nice twist.

The Zombie Hoard Wild can also appear Super Stacked on the third and fourth reels. Another nice touch is the Free Spins feature which can be activated two ways. The first is to get three, four or five of the Brain Scatters. The other is by collecting tokens which appear on the lower value symbols – once we get 30 or more we trigger the spins. During this round we can claw up to 34 Free Spins, with Super Stacked Wilds and a x2 Multiplier.

Forget shotguns and explosives. Free spins are definitely what we need when we face the zombie apocalypse.

Verdict

Microgaming and Slingshot Studios give us a simple slot to enjoy. And sometimes simple is just what we need. Colourful characters, a beautifully designed background and symbols with a popular theme.
